Dr. Aria Ravery offers an individualized approach for patients with symptomatic or recurrent ganglion cysts that cause pain, discomfort, reduced movement, or difficulty with everyday activities. Performed by orthopedic surgeon and traumatologist Dr. Aria Ravery, Ganglion Cyst Excision is available as part of his minor orthopedic surgical services in San José, Costa Rica. Dr. Ravery combines broad orthopedic experience with a patient-focused approach that considers the cyst’s location, symptoms, functional impact, and previous treatment. The goal of care is to address persistent symptoms, improve comfort and mobility, and help appropriately selected patients return to normal hand, wrist, foot, or ankle function with greater confidence.

🩺 What Is Ganglion Cyst Excision?

Ganglion Cyst Excision is a procedure that removes a ganglion cyst and its connection to the nearby joint or tendon sheath when needed. These cysts contain a thick, jelly-like fluid and may vary in size.

They can be painless or cause pain, stiffness, weakness, or limited movement in the hand, wrist, foot, or ankle. Before surgery, the cyst is evaluated to confirm the diagnosis and determine if treatment is necessary. Small, symptom-free cysts may only require observation, while surgery is considered when symptoms persist, recur, or affect function despite conservative care. During the procedure, the cyst is removed through a small incision, along with its connection to reduce the risk of recurrence. The goal is to relieve symptoms, improve function, and restore comfortable use of the affected area. Recovery depends on the cyst’s size and location, and recurrence is still possible.

🩺 Types of Ganglion Cyst Excision

  • Open Ganglion Cyst Excision – A direct surgical approach in which an incision is made over or near the cyst so the surgeon can identify and remove the cyst and its attachment.
  • Dorsal Wrist Ganglion Excision – Removal of a ganglion located on the back of the wrist. Dorsal wrist ganglia are among the most frequently encountered types of ganglion cyst.
  • Volar Wrist Ganglion Excision – Treatment of a cyst located on the palm side of the wrist. Careful surgical planning is important because important nerves and blood vessels may be close to the cyst.

🩺 Who Is a Good Candidate?

Ganglion Cyst Excision may be appropriate for patients whose cyst is causing persistent symptoms or interfering with everyday function. Not every ganglion cyst requires surgery, so an orthopedic assessment is important before deciding on treatment.

✔️ Patients experiencing pain or tenderness around the cyst
✔️ People whose cyst interferes with wrist, hand, finger, foot, or ankle movement
✔️ Patients experiencing discomfort during gripping, lifting, exercise, or repetitive activities
✔️ Individuals with pressure symptoms involving nearby nerves or soft tissues
✔️ Patients whose cyst repeatedly returns after previous treatment
✔️ Individuals with a noticeable cyst that continues to enlarge or cause functional concern

📝 Consultation & Preparation

Consultation for Ganglion Cyst Excision focuses on confirming the diagnosis, understanding the symptoms, and determining whether surgical removal is appropriate. Dr. Aria Ravery’s orthopedic practice emphasizes individualized evaluation rather than assuming that every ganglion cyst requires surgery.

✔️ Detailed evaluation of the cyst’s location, size, consistency, and mobility
✔️ Assessment of pain, tenderness, movement, grip strength, and functional limitations
✔️ Review of how long the cyst has been present and whether its size changes
✔️ Discussion of previous observation, aspiration, injections, or other treatments when applicable
✔️ Review of medical conditions, previous surgery, medications, and allergies
✔️ Examination of nearby joints, tendons, nerves, and circulation
✔️ Imaging such as ultrasound, X-ray, or MRI may be considered when clinically necessary or when the diagnosis is uncertain

🩺 Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery after Ganglion Cyst Excision is usually focused on protecting the incision, controlling swelling, maintaining appropriate movement, and gradually restoring normal use of the affected area. The exact recovery plan depends on the cyst’s location and the extent of surgery.

✔️ The surgical area is usually protected with a dressing after the procedure
✔️ The hand, wrist, foot, or ankle may need to be elevated during the early healing period
✔️ Prescribed or recommended pain medication should be used according to medical instructions
✔️ The incision should be kept clean and protected according to the surgeon’s wound-care guidance
✔️ Gentle movement of unaffected fingers or joints may be encouraged when appropriate to reduce stiffness
