At Asan Medical Center Brain Tumor Center, patients receive specialized care through a multidisciplinary approach that may include neurosurgery, oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, nuclear medicine, endocrinology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, and rehabilitation support. Treatment is planned according to the tumor type, tumor location, growth pattern, symptoms, neurological function, and overall health condition. The goal is to treat the tumor while protecting brain function, quality of life, and future recovery.

🔍 What Is Brain Tumor Surgery?

Brain tumor surgery is a neurosurgical procedure used to remove, reduce, or biopsy abnormal tissue inside the brain or surrounding structures within the skull. Brain tumors may be benign, malignant, primary tumors that begin in the brain, or metastatic tumors that spread to the brain from cancers in other parts of the body.

The main purpose of brain tumor surgery is to safely remove as much of the tumor as medically appropriate while protecting critical brain functions such as movement, speech, memory, vision, balance, and coordination. In some cases, surgery may aim for complete tumor removal. In other cases, the goal may be tumor debulking, tissue diagnosis, pressure relief, or preparation for additional treatments such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, or neuro-oncology care. Modern brain tumor surgery may involve advanced imaging and intraoperative technologies to improve surgical accuracy. Depending on the case, treatment planning may include MRI, CT, functional MRI, neuronavigation, neurophysiologic monitoring, intraoperative ultrasound, or intraoperative CT. Brain tumor surgery is especially complex because every patient’s anatomy and diagnosis are different.

🩺 Types of Brain Tumor Surgery

  • Microsurgical Brain Tumor Resection – A precise surgical approach used to remove brain tumors while protecting nearby brain tissue and neurological function.
  • Craniotomy for Brain Tumor Removal – A standard brain tumor surgery where a section of the skull is temporarily opened to access and remove the tumor safely.
  • Skull Base Tumor Surgery – A specialized procedure for tumors located at the base of the skull, often requiring advanced planning and collaboration with other surgical specialties.
  • Endoscopic Brain Tumor Surgery – A minimally invasive approach that may be used for selected tumors, including certain pituitary and skull base tumors.
  • Stereotactic Brain Biopsy – A targeted procedure used to collect tumor tissue for diagnosis when full removal is not the safest first step.
  • Debulking Surgery for Malignant Brain Tumors – A procedure that reduces tumor volume and supports further treatment such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or targeted therapy.

🩺 Who Is a Good Candidate?

Brain tumor surgery may be suitable for patients who have been diagnosed with a brain tumor or suspected intracranial lesion and need expert neurosurgical evaluation. The decision depends on the tumor type, size, location, symptoms, growth rate, surgical risk, and whether the tumor can be safely removed or biopsied.

✔️ Patients diagnosed with a benign brain tumor such as meningioma, schwannoma, or pituitary adenoma
✔️ Patients diagnosed with malignant brain tumors such as glioma, high-grade glioma, or other aggressive tumors
✔️ Individuals with metastatic brain tumors from cancers in other parts of the body
✔️ Patients with brain tumor symptoms such as headaches, seizures, weakness, vision changes, balance problems, speech difficulty, or memory concerns
✔️ Patients whose tumor is causing pressure, swelling, or neurological impairment
✔️ Individuals who need tissue diagnosis through biopsy before oncology treatment
✔️ Patients whose tumor location allows safe surgical access
✔️ Patients who may benefit from tumor removal, tumor reduction, or pressure relief
✔️ Individuals requiring coordinated care between neurosurgery, oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology

📝 Consultation & Preparation

A detailed consultation is essential before brain tumor surgery because every case requires precise diagnosis and careful risk assessment. At Asan Medical Center, treatment planning may involve advanced imaging, neurological evaluation, pathology review, oncology input, radiation oncology planning, and discussion through a multidisciplinary brain tumor team. Preparation focuses on confirming the diagnosis, understanding the tumor’s relationship to critical brain areas, and selecting the safest treatment strategy.

✔️ Complete medical history review, including cancer history, neurological symptoms, seizures, previous surgery, and current medications
✔️ Review of previous MRI, CT scan, PET scan, pathology reports, biopsy results, and oncology records if available
✔️ Brain MRI or additional imaging to define tumor size, location, swelling, and relationship to functional brain areas
✔️ CT scan or specialized imaging when needed for skull, bone, vascular, or surgical planning
✔️ Functional MRI or neurological mapping when the tumor is close to important brain regions
✔️ Neurological examination to assess movement, sensation, speech, vision, balance, cognition, and seizure history
✔️ Medication review, especially blood thinners, steroids, anti-seizure medication, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy

🩺 Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery after brain tumor surgery depends on the tumor type, surgical approach, tumor location, neurological condition before surgery, and whether additional treatment is needed. Some patients recover steadily after tumor removal, while others require longer neurological rehabilitation, seizure control, steroid management, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or continued oncology follow-up.

✔️ Initial recovery usually includes close monitoring in the hospital after surgery
✔️ Neurological checks are performed to assess speech, movement, vision, memory, strength, and level of alertness
✔️ Pain, swelling, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, or temporary neurological symptoms may occur during early recovery
✔️ Medication may include pain control, steroids to reduce swelling, anti-seizure medication, antibiotics, or other supportive treatment
✔️ Follow-up MRI or imaging may be used to evaluate surgical results and guide the next treatment plan
✔️ Patients may need physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, or neurorehabilitation depending on symptoms
✔️ Wound care instructions help reduce infection risk and support proper healing
✔️ Patients are usually advised to avoid heavy lifting, intense exercise, driving, alcohol, and long travel until cleared by the medical team

The staff in the emergency room were all extremely helpful, professional, and friendly. Highly recommend for their awesome services! One of the patrol guys was super nice and went extra miles to help us booked a venti taxi as foreigners can't really book a 5 pax car. So thankful to meet someone so nice in our journey 💓 Great food selection in this hospital. They even have nasi goreng (Malaysia fried rice) here lol feels like home. The only slightly bad experience was the receptionists can't speak English/Chinese, but it's their attitude that disgust us the most. One of the lady receptionists rolled her eyes on me when I speak English. I don't think that's the best way to treat anyone esp in a professional setting. To Asan Management, please train your receptionists to be more professional in attending patients/visitors enquiries.

  • ASAN Medical Center is a leader in research and medical care. I was unable to get medical help here in the United States due to a lack of professionalism and discrimination. After, two years of research and a business trip to South Korea, I learned about ASAN Medical Center. I knew through research that they were the best in the world and I was determined to seek answers for my condition. It took 3 months but I was elated when Professor Ko ( who specializes in Gastric cancer, Robotic Surgery, Bariatric, and Metabolic Surgery, Hernia Surgery) was assigned to my case. In December of 2023, I was traveling again to South Korea and spent a week going through a plethora of tests. I was in awe of the care, and respect as a patient which I received, and the best part was Dr. Ko took the time to explain to me in detail what was discovered and the next steps. I remember crying alone on New Year's Day in my hospital room, for the first time there was hope. In 2024, I underwent 2 successful surgeries. In the United States, after the surgeon performs the surgery you never see nor hear from them. Getting access is impossible! Not at ASAN Medical Center. I saw Dr. Ko and Dr. Yoo every day and the rest of the medical team including the head nurse. My wounds were cleaned constantly by a wound care nurse, I had nurses every hour to 2 hours to check-in, and the International Nurse, Nurse Park checked on me daily. I also had the honor of working with a phenomenal nutritionist who is still instrumental in how I eat. I was never made to feel alone given that I was far away from home and going through a scary process by myself. I was treated as a human being for the first time and was never treated differently because of the color of my skin. As a patient at ASAN Medical Center, the patient matters. I had real conversations with my surgeons, I was not only healing physically but mentally and spiritually. I was given a second chance, a chance to live, a chance to be healthy, and a new journey to become better than before. I was so sad when I was leaving. However, I was provided with the tools to keep healing. I encourage everyone to think outside the box and seek other options. ASAN Medical Center was my best option and can be yours too. Now, I plan to travel to South Korea to ASAN Medical Center every year for my follow-ups and annuals. I will never trust anyone else with my health. Dr. Ko is a genius. There are no words to describe his incredible mind and brilliance. Dr. Yoo is not an ordinary surgeon, his phenomenal approach to patient care and his tireless efforts in ensuring that his patients succeed is phenomenal. They are both my rock throughout this process. I was blessed to have a great team and you can too. Never lose hope especially when you feel you cannot go on anymore. Keep fighting! ASAN Medical Center is far more advanced in technology, patient care, research, and professionalism than any hospital I have been to. Thank you, Professor Ko, Dr. Yoo, Nurse Park, the nurses, the staff, International Department! I highly recommend ASAN Medical Center to every patient. Seek the International Center-Nurse Jenny Park is the best! If you have similar needs to me, I highly recommend Dr. Ko and Dr. Yoo.
