Advanced Spine Surgery to Relieve Pain and Restore Stability

Cervical Discectomy + Fusion (ACDF) is one of the most commonly performed spine surgeries worldwide. This procedure relieves nerve compression caused by a damaged cervical disc and provides long-term stability by fusing the affected vertebrae. At Clínica Bíblica Hospital, patients benefit from experienced spine specialists, cutting-edge surgical technology, and compassionate care rooted in over 94 years of excellence.

🩺 What Is a Cervical Discectomy + Fusion (1 Level)?

A Cervical Discectomy + Fusion (ACDF) is a spine surgery where a herniated or degenerated disc is removed from the cervical spine (neck). Once the disc is taken out, the surgeon places a bone graft or synthetic implant between the two vertebrae to “fuse” them together, creating long-term stability.

The goal of the procedure is twofold:
✔️ Relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves (to reduce pain, tingling, or weakness).
✔️ Stabilize the neck to prevent future movement-related issues at that level.

🩺 Types of Cervical Discectomy + Fusion

There are different techniques and materials used depending on the patient’s condition:

✔️ Traditional ACDF – Removal of the damaged disc followed by placement of a bone graft.
✔️ ACDF with Plate and Screws – Additional metal hardware to secure stability during healing.
✔️ Synthetic Spacer Fusion – Use of advanced biocompatible implants instead of bone grafts.
✔️ Minimally Invasive ACDF – Smaller incisions and less tissue disruption, leading to faster recovery.

🩺 Who Is a Good Candidate?

Patients may be recommended for Cervical Discectomy + Fusion, 1 Level if they:

✅ Have a herniated or degenerated disc in the cervical spine causing nerve compression
✅ Experience chronic neck pain radiating to shoulders or arms
✅ Have numbness, tingling, or weakness that impacts daily function
✅ Do not respond to non-surgical treatments like physical therapy or medications
✅ Are in good overall health to undergo anesthesia and surgery.

🩺 Consultation & Preparation

A successful ACDF procedure begins with thorough preparation, including:

✔️ Detailed physical examination and review of medical history
✔️ Imaging studies (MRI, CT, or X-rays) to confirm disc damage
✔️ Pre-surgical lab tests and anesthesia evaluation
✔️ Guidance on stopping blood thinners or other medications if necessary
✔️ Lifestyle preparation, including quitting smoking and arranging home support after discharge

The consultation also helps patients understand surgical risks, expected recovery time, and long-term outcomes.

🩺 Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery after Cervical Discectomy + Fusion is structured and progressive:

✅ Typical hospital stay is 1–2 days compared to 4–5 with open surgery
✅ Most women resume light activities in 2 weeks, full recovery in 4–6 weeks
✅ Pain and discomfort are minimal and managed with medication
✅ Walking is encouraged soon after surgery to improve circulation
✅ Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least 6 weeks
✅ Regular follow-up appointments monitor healing and address hormonal needs if ovaries are removed

As a tourist, I broke my leg in Costa Rica. At your clinic, I was kindly welcomed. The surgery was successful, and the medical staff were very friendly. The level of comfort at your clinic was very high, significantly higher than what I would have experienced in my home country. I would like to praise all the staff for their attention and care, especially Dr. Castro, who made my foot surgery and is the kind of doctor every patient wishes for. The room where I recovered was spacious and beautiful, and the food was more delicious than in restaurants. Although I had a less pleasant experience at the end of my vacation due to the injury, I must still mention that the staff at this clinic helped me as a tourist, get through the situation with less fear, as everything was handled at a very high level. Finally, I would like to add that I have traveled to many places around the world, and this last trip to Costa Rica was also the best trip of my life so far. Pura Vida

Dr. Mario Moreira Villalaz was exactly on time for our appointment. He took an interest in me and my well-being and performed a thorough examination. My appointment lasted almost an hour and Dr. Moreira covered everything I wanted him to and more. I look forward to being his patient for a long time.
