Restoring Mobility with Precision Care

Partial Knee Replacement (also called unicompartmental knee replacement) is a modern surgical solution for patients with damage confined to just one part of the knee joint. At Clínica Bíblica Hospital, Costa Rica’s most trusted healthcare network, patients receive advanced surgical care combined with compassionate support — ensuring faster recovery, reduced pain, and restored quality of life.

🩺 What Is a Partial Knee Replacement?

A Partial Knee Replacement is a minimally invasive alternative to total knee replacement. Instead of replacing the entire joint, only the damaged portion of the knee (medial, lateral, or kneecap compartment) is resurfaced with metal and medical-grade plastic components. By preserving the healthy parts of the knee, this procedure allows for a more natural joint feel, quicker rehabilitation, and excellent long-term outcomes.

🩺 Types of Partial Knee Replacement

✔️ Medial Partial Knee Replacement – Targets arthritis or damage in the inner (medial) portion of the knee.
✔️ Lateral Partial Knee Replacement – Replaces only the outer (lateral) section of the knee joint.
✔️ Patellofemoral Replacement – Focuses on the kneecap and groove area when arthritis is localized there.

🩺 Who Is a Good Candidate?

Patients who benefit most from knee replacement typically suffer from:

✔️ Severe osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
✔️ Chronic pain that limits daily activities
✔️ Stiffness or reduced range of motion in the knee
✔️ Knee deformity or trauma-related damage
✔️ Limited success with physical therapy, injections, or medications

🩺 Consultation & Preparation

Before undergoing partial knee replacement at Clínica Bíblica Hospital, patients undergo:
✔️ Comprehensive medical evaluation and imaging to confirm joint damage.
✔️ Review of medical history, lifestyle, and expectations.
✔️ Pre-surgery guidance on medication management and fasting requirements.
✔️ Lifestyle advice such as stopping smoking and controlling weight for best outcomes.

🩺 Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery after a partial knee replacement is typically faster than total knee replacement. Patients can expect:

✔️ Hospital stay of 1–2 days with close monitoring.
✔️ Early mobilization within 24 hours to prevent stiffness.
✔️ Physical therapy to rebuild strength and improve range of motion.
✔️ Return to most normal activities within 4–6 weeks.
✔️ Long-term results with proper exercise, diet, and regular follow-up.

On February 1, 2026, I was on a night hike near Monteverde, Costa Rica when my left foot went down a hole and my left ankle was dislocated and suffered four fractures in the left ankle bones. I was transported by ambulance back to San Jose, CR. I was taken to Hospital Clinica Biblica and the next seven days were better than I could ever have expected or hoped for. My attending physician was Dr David Jenkins and after x-rays, plus putting there ankle back in its socket, I was informed that I would need surgery on the ankle within two days. My husband, Duncan and I were put in a private room so that he could stay with me. There was a couch that converted to a bed in the room (#306, the third floor staff is fantastic). Surgery on the ankle was performed two nights later and the physicians, Dr Alvarez and Dr Jenkins did a remarkable getting all the bones reconnected. We stayed in the room an additional three nights before flying back home. Dr Alvarez made daily visits to check on me and to monitor my pain levels. After getting back to Charlotte, NC, I had an appointment with a sports medicine/orthopedic surgeon. Dr Seth Richmond was very complimentary of the work done from the x-rays that he took in his office. In summary, I would describe Hospital Clinica Biblical in San Jose, Costa Rica as a world class facility with great physicians, surgeons, and staff. It is absolutely a five star hospital. BWM
