🩺 What Are Minor Hand and Upper Extremity Procedures?

Minor Hand and Upper Extremity Procedures treat selected conditions affecting the nerves, tendons, joints, and soft tissues of the hand and wrist. Examples include Carpal Tunnel Release, Trigger Finger Release, and Ganglion or Synovial Cyst Excision. These procedures may be recommended when symptoms persist, limit hand function, or do not improve with conservative treatment. Dr. Ravery evaluates each patient’s diagnosis, severity, and treatment history before recommending surgery. The goal is to relieve symptoms and improve hand or wrist function. Recovery depends on the procedure and the patient’s healing response.

🩺 Types of Minor Hand and Upper Extremity Procedures

  • Carpal Tunnel Release – A procedure designed to reduce pressure on the median nerve at the wrist in patients with clinically significant carpal tunnel syndrome. Releasing the constricting tissue creates additional space for the nerve and may help improve symptoms such as numbness, tingling, discomfort, and hand weakness.
  • Trigger Finger Release – A focused procedure used for persistent trigger finger or trigger thumb. The constricted portion of the tendon sheath is released so the affected tendon can move more freely, helping reduce catching, clicking, stiffness, or locking during finger movement.
  • Ganglion Cyst Excision – Surgical removal of a symptomatic ganglion cyst, most commonly arising near a joint or tendon sheath in the wrist or hand. Excision may be considered when the cyst causes persistent pain, affects movement or function, compresses nearby structures, or repeatedly returns.

🩺 Who Is a Good Candidate?

Minor Hand and Upper Extremity Procedures may be appropriate for confirmed conditions causing persistent pain, altered sensation, locking, weakness, swelling, or functional difficulty. Surgical treatment depends on the diagnosis and response to prior care.

✔️ Patients with persistent numbness, tingling, or discomfort associated with carpal tunnel syndrome
✔️ Individuals experiencing hand weakness or reduced grip related to median nerve compression
✔️ Patients with a finger or thumb that repeatedly catches, clicks, becomes stiff, or locks
✔️ Individuals with persistent trigger finger symptoms despite appropriate conservative treatment
✔️ Patients with a painful or functionally limiting ganglion or synovial cyst
✔️ Individuals with recurrent cysts that continue to cause symptoms or interfere with daily activities

📝 Consultation & Preparation

A detailed orthopedic consultation helps determine the cause of hand or wrist symptoms and whether surgery is the appropriate next step. Because numbness, weakness, pain, stiffness, or swelling can originate from different structures, evaluation is tailored to the patient’s symptoms and clinical findings.

✔️ Detailed review of hand, wrist, and upper extremity symptoms
✔️ Physical examination of movement, tenderness, sensation, strength, and functional limitations
✔️ Review of how symptoms affect work, sleep, gripping, lifting, or everyday hand use
✔️ Assessment of previous treatments and the patient’s response to conservative care
✔️ Review of medical conditions, previous procedures, allergies, and current medications

🩺 Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery varies by the procedure and your health. Follow wound-care instructions and return to activity gradually.

✔️ Temporary tenderness, swelling, stiffness, or discomfort may occur around the surgical area
✔️ Keeping the hand elevated may be recommended during the early recovery period to help control swelling
✔️ Dressings and the incision should be kept clean and protected according to postoperative instructions
✔️ Gentle movement of permitted fingers may be encouraged to reduce unnecessary stiffness
✔️ Heavy gripping, repetitive hand use, lifting, or strenuous activity may need to be limited during early healing
✔️ Prescribed or recommended pain medication should be used according to medical instructions
✔️ Incision and wound care instructions should be followed carefully to reduce healing problems

I think your services were very professional and provided lots of confidence. You made us feel very comfortable. We appreciated your follow through with questions that we had after we got back to California. our orthopedic surgeon in California when we went for a follow up said that the hip was healing nicely and that surgery was outstanding. Tom continues to improve walking now with a cane. Some pain in the anterior left thigh with moderate stiffness. He is Going to the gym a couple times a week at riding bicycle plus walking, trying to get ready for our next trip to Istanbul in Greece in late August. We felt very fortunate that you were our doc, many thanks again!!

After undergoing knee replacement surgery, I experienced numerous complications, resulting in several months in the hospital and significant limited mobility in my knee. Since I had already met Dr. Ravery, I visited him, and he recommended an arthroscopy for improvement. He performed the procedure, and it was a complete success; I'm doing very well. It's worth mentioning that, in addition to being a highly skilled professional, he inspires great confidence. I am also incredibly grateful and admire him for his constant monitoring of my progress after the surgery. Furthermore, I appreciate that he is always quick to respond whenever I contact him with a question and offers advice on what I should do, if needed.
