Lung Cancer Surgery in Seoul, South Korea by Asan Medical Center

Advanced Thoracic Cancer Surgery for Precise Tumor Removal, Accurate Staging & Coordinated Recovery

Lung Cancer Surgery in Seoul, South Korea at Asan Medical Center is a specialized thoracic procedure designed to remove cancerous lung tissue while preserving as much healthy lung function as possible. This treatment may be recommended for selected patients with early-stage lung cancer, operable non-small cell lung cancer, or localized tumors where surgery offers a strong treatment option. Asan Medical Center’s Lung Cancer Center focuses on timely diagnosis, specialist consultations, coordinator support, and customized treatment planning for lung cancer patients. The center also uses a multidisciplinary approach that includes pulmonology, oncology, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, nuclear medicine, and pathology to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for each patient.

🔍 What Is Lung Cancer Surgery?

During lung cancer surgery, the thoracic surgery team evaluates the location, size, and spread of the tumor before deciding how much lung tissue should be removed. In some patients, only a small part of the lung may need to be removed. In others, a full lobe or a larger section may be necessary.

The surgical plan depends on tumor position, lymph node involvement, lung function, heart condition, overall health, and previous treatments. Modern lung cancer surgery may be performed using open surgery or minimally invasive techniques such as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery or robotic-assisted thoracic surgery when suitable. Minimally invasive approaches may use smaller incisions and may help reduce postoperative discomfort in appropriate patients. Asan Medical Center’s thoracic surgery department states that minimally invasive intra-thoracic endoscopic surgeries have been adopted to help reduce postoperative pain and surgical risks compared with conventional open chest surgery. Lung cancer surgery is not only about removing the tumor. It is also part of a complete cancer care pathway. After surgery, pathology results help determine whether chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, or close follow-up is needed. A careful recovery plan, breathing rehabilitation, wound care, pain control, and regular imaging are all important for long-term outcomes.

🩺 Types of Lung Cancer Surgery

  • Lobectomy – Removes one lobe of the lung and is commonly used when the tumor is limited to a single lobe and the patient has adequate lung function.
  • Pneumonectomy – Removes an entire lung and may be required for larger or centrally located tumors when smaller resections are not medically suitable.
  • Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery – A minimally invasive approach using small incisions and a camera to perform lung resection in suitable patients.
  • Robotic-Assisted Thoracic Surgery – Uses robotic surgical technology to support precise movement and visualization during selected lung cancer procedures.
  • Mediastinal Lymph Node Dissection – Removes or samples lymph nodes in the chest to help confirm cancer staging and guide additional treatment decisions.

🩺 Who Is a Good Candidate?

Lung cancer surgery may be suitable for patients whose cancer is technically removable and whose general health allows them to tolerate thoracic surgery. Final eligibility depends on accurate staging, imaging, biopsy results, pulmonary function, heart evaluation, and multidisciplinary review.

✔️ Individuals with a localized lung tumor that has not widely spread
✔️ Patients whose tumor can be removed safely by thoracic surgery
✔️ Individuals with adequate lung function for the planned resection
✔️ Patients with acceptable heart and anesthesia fitness
✔️ Patients who may benefit from surgery after chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or radiation in selected cases
✔️ Individuals with suspicious lung nodules requiring surgical diagnosis or removal
✔️ Patients who understand the recovery process and follow-up requirements
✔️ Non-smokers or patients willing to stop smoking before and after surgery

📝 Consultation & Preparation

Consultation and preparation for lung cancer surgery are essential because the surgical plan must be based on accurate staging and complete medical assessment. International patients should prepare recent records before traveling so the thoracic surgery and lung cancer team can review the case efficiently.

✔️ Review of diagnosis, symptoms, medical history, and previous treatments
✔️ Evaluation of biopsy and pathology reports confirming lung cancer type
✔️ Chest CT scan review to assess tumor size, location, and nearby structures
✔️ PET-CT scan when needed to evaluate lymph nodes and possible spread
✔️ Brain MRI or additional imaging when clinically required for staging
✔️ Bronchoscopy, EBUS, or tissue sampling if more diagnostic information is needed
✔️ Pulmonary function testing to assess breathing capacity before surgery
✔️ Cardiac evaluation, ECG, and anesthesia assessment for surgical safety
✔️ Blood tests, infection screening, and general pre-operative investigations
✔️ Medication review, including blood thinners, diabetes medicines, supplements, and immune therapy history

🩺 Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery after lung cancer surgery depends on the type of operation, surgical approach, lung function, age, overall health, and whether additional cancer treatment is needed. Some patients recover faster after minimally invasive surgery, while others need a longer recovery period after larger resections. Proper aftercare is important for breathing function, wound healing, pain control, and long-term follow-up.

✔️ Hospital monitoring after surgery to observe breathing, oxygen levels, pain, and chest drainage
✔️ Chest tube care when needed to drain air or fluid from the surgical area
✔️ Pain control with prescribed medications to support comfortable breathing and movement
✔️ Breathing exercises to help expand the lungs and reduce postoperative complications
✔️ Early walking as advised by the medical team to support circulation and lung recovery
✔️ Wound care instructions to keep incision areas clean and reduce infection risk
✔️ Avoiding heavy lifting, intense exercise, and strenuous activity during early healing
✔️ Gradual return to normal daily activities based on surgeon approval
✔️ Follow-up imaging and clinic visits to monitor recovery and lung condition

The staff in the emergency room were all extremely helpful, professional, and friendly. Highly recommend for their awesome services! One of the patrol guys was super nice and went extra miles to help us booked a venti taxi as foreigners can't really book a 5 pax car. So thankful to meet someone so nice in our journey 💓 Great food selection in this hospital. They even have nasi goreng (Malaysia fried rice) here lol feels like home. The only slightly bad experience was the receptionists can't speak English/Chinese, but it's their attitude that disgust us the most. One of the lady receptionists rolled her eyes on me when I speak English. I don't think that's the best way to treat anyone esp in a professional setting. To Asan Management, please train your receptionists to be more professional in attending patients/visitors enquiries.

  • ASAN Medical Center is a leader in research and medical care. I was unable to get medical help here in the United States due to a lack of professionalism and discrimination. After, two years of research and a business trip to South Korea, I learned about ASAN Medical Center. I knew through research that they were the best in the world and I was determined to seek answers for my condition. It took 3 months but I was elated when Professor Ko ( who specializes in Gastric cancer, Robotic Surgery, Bariatric, and Metabolic Surgery, Hernia Surgery) was assigned to my case. In December of 2023, I was traveling again to South Korea and spent a week going through a plethora of tests. I was in awe of the care, and respect as a patient which I received, and the best part was Dr. Ko took the time to explain to me in detail what was discovered and the next steps. I remember crying alone on New Year's Day in my hospital room, for the first time there was hope. In 2024, I underwent 2 successful surgeries. In the United States, after the surgeon performs the surgery you never see nor hear from them. Getting access is impossible! Not at ASAN Medical Center. I saw Dr. Ko and Dr. Yoo every day and the rest of the medical team including the head nurse. My wounds were cleaned constantly by a wound care nurse, I had nurses every hour to 2 hours to check-in, and the International Nurse, Nurse Park checked on me daily. I also had the honor of working with a phenomenal nutritionist who is still instrumental in how I eat. I was never made to feel alone given that I was far away from home and going through a scary process by myself. I was treated as a human being for the first time and was never treated differently because of the color of my skin. As a patient at ASAN Medical Center, the patient matters. I had real conversations with my surgeons, I was not only healing physically but mentally and spiritually. I was given a second chance, a chance to live, a chance to be healthy, and a new journey to become better than before. I was so sad when I was leaving. However, I was provided with the tools to keep healing. I encourage everyone to think outside the box and seek other options. ASAN Medical Center was my best option and can be yours too. Now, I plan to travel to South Korea to ASAN Medical Center every year for my follow-ups and annuals. I will never trust anyone else with my health. Dr. Ko is a genius. There are no words to describe his incredible mind and brilliance. Dr. Yoo is not an ordinary surgeon, his phenomenal approach to patient care and his tireless efforts in ensuring that his patients succeed is phenomenal. They are both my rock throughout this process. I was blessed to have a great team and you can too. Never lose hope especially when you feel you cannot go on anymore. Keep fighting! ASAN Medical Center is far more advanced in technology, patient care, research, and professionalism than any hospital I have been to. Thank you, Professor Ko, Dr. Yoo, Nurse Park, the nurses, the staff, International Department! I highly recommend ASAN Medical Center to every patient. Seek the International Center-Nurse Jenny Park is the best! If you have similar needs to me, I highly recommend Dr. Ko and Dr. Yoo.
