Advanced Robot-Assisted Cardiac Surgery for Precise Treatment, Smaller Incisions & Faster Functional Recovery

Robotic Surgery for Heart Disease is an advanced minimally invasive cardiac treatment option for selected patients with valve disease, coronary artery disease, congenital heart defects, or other structural heart conditions. At Asan Hospital in Seoul, South Korea, robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery is planned through detailed heart imaging, specialist evaluation, and multidisciplinary care. The goal is to treat complex heart disease with precision while reducing surgical trauma when compared with traditional open-chest approaches. For international patients seeking robotic heart surgery in South Korea, Asan Hospital offers advanced cardiac expertise, modern surgical infrastructure, and coordinated support for diagnosis, treatment planning, recovery, and follow-up.

🔍 What Is Robotic Surgery for Heart Disease?

Robotic Surgery for Heart Disease is a minimally invasive cardiac surgery technique that allows the surgeon to operate through small openings instead of a large chest incision. It is fully controlled by the cardiac surgeon, who guides precise robotic instruments while viewing the heart through high-definition magnified imaging.

This approach may be used for selected cardiac conditions where minimally invasive access is suitable. Common examples include certain heart valve disorders, selected coronary artery bypass procedures, ventricular septal defect repair, atrial myxoma removal, and other carefully chosen structural heart conditions. During robot-assisted cardiac surgery, the surgeon may use small incisions between the ribs to access the heart with specialized instruments. This can help reduce trauma to the chest wall, limit visible scarring, and support a smoother recovery for suitable patients. Robotic heart surgery is not suitable for every patient. Some patients with severe calcification, complex anatomy, advanced heart failure, emergency conditions, or multiple cardiac problems may require open-heart surgery or another treatment method.

🩺 Types of Robotic Surgery for Heart Disease

  • Robotic Mitral Valve Repair – Used for selected patients with mitral valve regurgitation when the valve can be repaired instead of replaced.
  • Robot-Assisted Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery – A minimally invasive option for selected coronary artery disease cases where bypass surgery is appropriate.
  • Robotic Ventricular Septal Defect Repair – Used in selected patients with a ventricular septal defect when anatomy allows minimally invasive correction.
  • Robotic Atrial Myxoma Excision – A minimally invasive surgical option for removing selected benign cardiac tumors from the atrium.

🩺 Who Is a Good Candidate?

Robotic Surgery for Heart Disease may be suitable for patients who need cardiac surgery but may benefit from a less invasive approach. Candidate selection is strict because heart surgery must prioritize safety, long-term function, and the most appropriate treatment method.

✔️ Patients with selected mitral valve disease, especially mitral regurgitation
✔️ Patients with certain coronary artery blockages requiring bypass surgery
✔️ Individuals with selected congenital heart defects, such as ventricular septal defect
✔️ Patients with atrial myxoma or selected structural heart conditions
✔️ Adults who are stable enough for planned cardiac surgery
✔️ Patients seeking smaller incisions and reduced chest trauma when medically appropriate
✔️ Individuals with suitable heart anatomy confirmed by imaging
✔️ Patients without severe uncontrolled infection or unstable medical conditions
✔️ Individuals who can complete pre-operative cardiac testing
✔️ Patients who understand that robotic surgery may not be possible in every case
✔️ Patients with realistic expectations about recovery and surgical outcomes

📝 Consultation & Preparation

A detailed consultation is essential before robotic surgery for heart disease because treatment depends on the exact diagnosis, heart structure, valve function, coronary artery condition, lung function, and overall surgical risk. At Asan Hospital, the planning process may involve cardiology, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, imaging specialists, anesthesia, and international patient coordination.

✔️ Review of medications, including blood thinners, antiplatelet therapy, blood pressure medicine, and diabetes medication
✔️ Echocardiogram to assess valve function, chamber size, pumping strength, and blood flow
✔️ CT scan or coronary angiography when coronary artery disease or surgical access needs evaluation
✔️ Electrocardiogram and rhythm assessment for patients with arrhythmia or palpitations
✔️ Blood tests to check kidney function, blood count, clotting profile, infection markers, and general health
✔️ Chest imaging and lung function assessment when required for minimally invasive access planning
✔️ Discussion of robotic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, catheter-based options, or open-heart surgery if needed
✔️ Review of anesthesia risks, hospital stay, ICU monitoring, and recovery expectations
✔️ Instructions about fasting, smoking cessation, medication adjustment, and travel timing

🩺 Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery after robotic surgery for heart disease varies depending on the procedure performed, the patient’s age, heart function, and overall health. Many suitable patients choose robotic or minimally invasive heart surgery because it may reduce chest trauma and support a more comfortable recovery compared with traditional open-chest surgery.

✔️ Initial monitoring in a cardiac intensive care or high-dependency setting after surgery
✔️ Regular checks of heart rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen levels, fluid balance, and incision healing
✔️ Pain management to support breathing, movement, and early recovery
✔️ Gradual walking and breathing exercises under medical supervision
✔️ Wound care for small chest incisions or access sites
✔️ Medication guidance, including anticoagulation or antiplatelet therapy when prescribed
✔️ Follow-up echocardiogram or imaging to assess repair results and heart function
✔️ Avoiding heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and long-distance travel until cleared by the medical team
✔️ Cardiac rehabilitation guidance when recommended
✔️ Monitoring for warning signs such as fever, worsening chest pain, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, swelling, or wound discharge
✔️ Follow-up appointments before returning home for international patients

The staff in the emergency room were all extremely helpful, professional, and friendly. Highly recommend for their awesome services! One of the patrol guys was super nice and went extra miles to help us booked a venti taxi as foreigners can't really book a 5 pax car. So thankful to meet someone so nice in our journey 💓 Great food selection in this hospital. They even have nasi goreng (Malaysia fried rice) here lol feels like home. The only slightly bad experience was the receptionists can't speak English/Chinese, but it's their attitude that disgust us the most. One of the lady receptionists rolled her eyes on me when I speak English. I don't think that's the best way to treat anyone esp in a professional setting. To Asan Management, please train your receptionists to be more professional in attending patients/visitors enquiries.

  • ASAN Medical Center is a leader in research and medical care. I was unable to get medical help here in the United States due to a lack of professionalism and discrimination. After, two years of research and a business trip to South Korea, I learned about ASAN Medical Center. I knew through research that they were the best in the world and I was determined to seek answers for my condition. It took 3 months but I was elated when Professor Ko ( who specializes in Gastric cancer, Robotic Surgery, Bariatric, and Metabolic Surgery, Hernia Surgery) was assigned to my case. In December of 2023, I was traveling again to South Korea and spent a week going through a plethora of tests. I was in awe of the care, and respect as a patient which I received, and the best part was Dr. Ko took the time to explain to me in detail what was discovered and the next steps. I remember crying alone on New Year's Day in my hospital room, for the first time there was hope. In 2024, I underwent 2 successful surgeries. In the United States, after the surgeon performs the surgery you never see nor hear from them. Getting access is impossible! Not at ASAN Medical Center. I saw Dr. Ko and Dr. Yoo every day and the rest of the medical team including the head nurse. My wounds were cleaned constantly by a wound care nurse, I had nurses every hour to 2 hours to check-in, and the International Nurse, Nurse Park checked on me daily. I also had the honor of working with a phenomenal nutritionist who is still instrumental in how I eat. I was never made to feel alone given that I was far away from home and going through a scary process by myself. I was treated as a human being for the first time and was never treated differently because of the color of my skin. As a patient at ASAN Medical Center, the patient matters. I had real conversations with my surgeons, I was not only healing physically but mentally and spiritually. I was given a second chance, a chance to live, a chance to be healthy, and a new journey to become better than before. I was so sad when I was leaving. However, I was provided with the tools to keep healing. I encourage everyone to think outside the box and seek other options. ASAN Medical Center was my best option and can be yours too. Now, I plan to travel to South Korea to ASAN Medical Center every year for my follow-ups and annuals. I will never trust anyone else with my health. Dr. Ko is a genius. There are no words to describe his incredible mind and brilliance. Dr. Yoo is not an ordinary surgeon, his phenomenal approach to patient care and his tireless efforts in ensuring that his patients succeed is phenomenal. They are both my rock throughout this process. I was blessed to have a great team and you can too. Never lose hope especially when you feel you cannot go on anymore. Keep fighting! ASAN Medical Center is far more advanced in technology, patient care, research, and professionalism than any hospital I have been to. Thank you, Professor Ko, Dr. Yoo, Nurse Park, the nurses, the staff, International Department! I highly recommend ASAN Medical Center to every patient. Seek the International Center-Nurse Jenny Park is the best! If you have similar needs to me, I highly recommend Dr. Ko and Dr. Yoo.
