Open Vascular Surgery in Seoul, South Korea by Asan Medical Center

Advanced Surgical Care for Artery, Vein & Complex Vascular Conditions

Open vascular surgery is a specialized surgical treatment used to repair, bypass, reconstruct, or remove diseased blood vessels when vascular conditions cannot be safely or effectively managed with medication or minimally invasive procedures alone. Patients may require open vascular surgery for conditions affecting the arteries, veins, aorta, carotid arteries, leg circulation, mesenteric arteries, or dialysis access. At Asan Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea, vascular surgery is supported by detailed diagnostic evaluation, advanced surgical planning, and multidisciplinary care for complex vascular disease. This approach helps international patients receive individualized treatment designed to restore blood flow, reduce serious vascular risks, and support long-term circulation health.

🔍 What Is Open Vascular Surgery?

Open vascular surgery refers to traditional surgical procedures performed through direct access to the affected blood vessel. The goal is to restore healthy circulation, prevent complications, remove blockages, repair weakened vessels, or create reliable vascular access when needed. This type of vascular surgery may be recommended for complex arterial blockages, abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, severe peripheral artery disease, venous disease, mesenteric artery problems, or vascular access complications in patients receiving hemodialysis.During open vascular surgery, the surgeon may remove plaque from an artery, bypass a blocked vessel, repair an aneurysm, revise a dialysis fistula, or reconstruct circulation using a graft or the patient’s own blood vessel when suitable. The procedure is performed under carefully monitored hospital conditions, with attention to blood flow, organ protection, wound healing, and post-operative recovery.

Open vascular surgery remains an important treatment option for selected patients, especially when vascular disease is advanced, anatomically complex, or unsuitable for endovascular repair.

🩺 Types of Open Vascular Surgery

  • Carotid Endarterectomy – Removes plaque from the carotid artery in the neck to help improve blood flow to the brain and reduce stroke-related vascular risk in selected patients.
  • Open Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair – Repairs a weakened or enlarged section of the abdominal aorta using surgical reconstruction when open repair is considered appropriate.
  • Peripheral Artery Bypass Surgery – Creates a new pathway for blood flow around blocked or narrowed arteries in the legs, helping improve circulation in patients with severe peripheral artery disease.
  • Arteriovenous Fistula Creation or Revision – Creates, repairs, or revises vascular access for patients who require hemodialysis due to end-stage renal disease.

🩺 Who Is a Good Candidate?

Open vascular surgery may be suitable for patients with significant artery or vein disease that requires direct surgical repair. A vascular specialist determines candidacy after reviewing imaging, symptoms, medical history, and overall surgical risk. The best candidates are patients whose condition can benefit from improved blood flow, vessel repair, aneurysm treatment, or vascular access correction.

✔️ Individuals with leg pain while walking, rest pain, or poor wound healing due to reduced circulation
✔️ Patients with carotid artery narrowing who may require surgical plaque removal
✔️ Individuals with abdominal aortic aneurysm or iliac artery aneurysm requiring repair
✔️ Patients with complex vascular anatomy not suitable for simple catheter-based treatment
✔️ Individuals with mesenteric artery disease causing blood flow problems to the intestines
✔️ Patients with vascular access complications related to hemodialysis
✔️ Individuals with severe venous disease, swelling, skin changes, or venous ulcers
✔️ Patients who have completed vascular imaging and specialist evaluation
✔️ Adults with stable enough heart, kidney, lung, and general health for surgery
✔️ Patients who understand the recovery process and follow-up requirements

📝 Consultation & Preparation

Preparation for open vascular surgery begins with a detailed review of the patient’s vascular diagnosis, symptoms, imaging results, and previous treatments. International patients are usually asked to share recent medical records, medication lists, imaging reports, laboratory results, and specialist notes before the hospital evaluation. This helps the vascular surgery team understand the urgency, complexity, and safest treatment pathway.

✔️ Review of diagnosis, symptoms, medical history, and previous procedures
✔️ Evaluation of CT angiography, MR angiography, ultrasound, or vascular imaging when available
✔️ Non-invasive vascular testing when required to assess blood flow and vessel condition
✔️ Review of heart, kidney, lung, diabetes, and blood pressure status
✔️ Medication review, including blood thinners, antiplatelet therapy, diabetes medication, and supplements
✔️ Blood tests, cardiac assessment, anesthesia review, and infection screening if needed
✔️ Discussion of open surgery, endovascular options, or hybrid treatment when applicable
✔️ Explanation of surgical goals, hospital stay, possible risks, and expected recovery timeline
✔️ Planning for wound care, mobility support, follow-up imaging, and long-term vascular management

🩺 Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery after open vascular surgery depends on the type of operation, the patient’s condition before surgery, and the complexity of the vascular repair. Some patients require close monitoring in the hospital after surgery, especially when the procedure involves the aorta, carotid artery, major leg arteries, or dialysis access. The care team monitors circulation, wound healing, pain control, blood pressure, and overall recovery.

✔️ Hospital monitoring after surgery to assess circulation and general stability
✔️ Regular checks of pulses, limb temperature, skin color, and blood flow
✔️ Pain control and medication support during early recovery
✔️ Wound care instructions to reduce infection risk and support proper healing
✔️ Gradual walking and mobility guidance based on the surgical site
✔️ Avoiding heavy lifting, smoking, and strenuous activity during early healing
✔️ Blood thinner or antiplatelet management when prescribed by the specialist
✔️ Follow-up imaging or vascular ultrasound when needed to assess the repair

The staff in the emergency room were all extremely helpful, professional, and friendly. Highly recommend for their awesome services! One of the patrol guys was super nice and went extra miles to help us booked a venti taxi as foreigners can't really book a 5 pax car. So thankful to meet someone so nice in our journey 💓 Great food selection in this hospital. They even have nasi goreng (Malaysia fried rice) here lol feels like home. The only slightly bad experience was the receptionists can't speak English/Chinese, but it's their attitude that disgust us the most. One of the lady receptionists rolled her eyes on me when I speak English. I don't think that's the best way to treat anyone esp in a professional setting. To Asan Management, please train your receptionists to be more professional in attending patients/visitors enquiries.

  • ASAN Medical Center is a leader in research and medical care. I was unable to get medical help here in the United States due to a lack of professionalism and discrimination. After, two years of research and a business trip to South Korea, I learned about ASAN Medical Center. I knew through research that they were the best in the world and I was determined to seek answers for my condition. It took 3 months but I was elated when Professor Ko ( who specializes in Gastric cancer, Robotic Surgery, Bariatric, and Metabolic Surgery, Hernia Surgery) was assigned to my case. In December of 2023, I was traveling again to South Korea and spent a week going through a plethora of tests. I was in awe of the care, and respect as a patient which I received, and the best part was Dr. Ko took the time to explain to me in detail what was discovered and the next steps. I remember crying alone on New Year's Day in my hospital room, for the first time there was hope. In 2024, I underwent 2 successful surgeries. In the United States, after the surgeon performs the surgery you never see nor hear from them. Getting access is impossible! Not at ASAN Medical Center. I saw Dr. Ko and Dr. Yoo every day and the rest of the medical team including the head nurse. My wounds were cleaned constantly by a wound care nurse, I had nurses every hour to 2 hours to check-in, and the International Nurse, Nurse Park checked on me daily. I also had the honor of working with a phenomenal nutritionist who is still instrumental in how I eat. I was never made to feel alone given that I was far away from home and going through a scary process by myself. I was treated as a human being for the first time and was never treated differently because of the color of my skin. As a patient at ASAN Medical Center, the patient matters. I had real conversations with my surgeons, I was not only healing physically but mentally and spiritually. I was given a second chance, a chance to live, a chance to be healthy, and a new journey to become better than before. I was so sad when I was leaving. However, I was provided with the tools to keep healing. I encourage everyone to think outside the box and seek other options. ASAN Medical Center was my best option and can be yours too. Now, I plan to travel to South Korea to ASAN Medical Center every year for my follow-ups and annuals. I will never trust anyone else with my health. Dr. Ko is a genius. There are no words to describe his incredible mind and brilliance. Dr. Yoo is not an ordinary surgeon, his phenomenal approach to patient care and his tireless efforts in ensuring that his patients succeed is phenomenal. They are both my rock throughout this process. I was blessed to have a great team and you can too. Never lose hope especially when you feel you cannot go on anymore. Keep fighting! ASAN Medical Center is far more advanced in technology, patient care, research, and professionalism than any hospital I have been to. Thank you, Professor Ko, Dr. Yoo, Nurse Park, the nurses, the staff, International Department! I highly recommend ASAN Medical Center to every patient. Seek the International Center-Nurse Jenny Park is the best! If you have similar needs to me, I highly recommend Dr. Ko and Dr. Yoo.
