Preimplantation Genetic Testing in Athens, Greece by Ovagenesis

Advanced Embryo Genetic Screening for Healthier IVF Treatment and Informed Family Planning

Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is an advanced laboratory technique used during IVF treatment to evaluate embryos for specific genetic or chromosomal abnormalities before embryo transfer. This innovative fertility technology helps fertility specialists identify embryos with the highest potential for implantation and healthy development. By selecting embryos that meet specific genetic criteria, PGT can support more informed treatment decisions and improve confidence throughout the IVF journey.

At Ovagenesis in Athens, Greece, Preimplantation Genetic Testing is integrated into personalized fertility treatment plans for eligible patients. The procedure is particularly beneficial for couples with a history of genetic disorders, recurrent pregnancy loss, repeated IVF failure, or advanced maternal age. PGT provides valuable information about embryo development while helping fertility specialists optimize embryo selection for transfer. For many intended parents, this advanced screening process offers reassurance and an additional level of precision during assisted reproduction treatment.

🔍 What Is Preimplantation Genetic Testing?

Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is a specialized genetic screening procedure performed on embryos created through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). The purpose of PGT is to examine embryos before transfer to identify specific genetic abnormalities or chromosomal variations that may affect implantation, pregnancy outcomes, or the future health of a child. During the IVF process, embryos are cultured in the laboratory until they reach the blastocyst stage.

A small number of cells are carefully biopsied from the outer layer of the embryo. These cells are then analyzed using advanced genetic testing techniques while the embryo is preserved for future transfer. Preimplantation Genetic Testing may be recommended for patients with inherited genetic conditions, previous recurrent miscarriages, repeated unsuccessful IVF cycles, or those seeking additional genetic information before embryo transfer. The results help fertility specialists identify embryos that meet the specific testing criteria established during treatment planning. It supports individualized reproductive care while helping patients make informed decisions regarding embryo selection and family-building goals.

🩺 Types of Preimplantation Genetic Testing

  • Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (PGT-A) – Screens embryos for chromosomal abnormalities involving chromosome number.
  • Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic Disorders (PGT-M) – Detects specific inherited genetic conditions caused by single-gene mutations.
  • Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Structural Rearrangements (PGT-SR) – Evaluates embryos when a parent carries chromosomal rearrangements such as translocations.
  • IVF with PGT and Frozen Embryo Transfer – Embryos are tested, cryopreserved, and transferred after genetic results are available.
  • Personalized Genetic Testing Protocols – Tailored testing strategies based on individual family history and fertility needs.

Yesterday Dr Garavelas performed the ovarian rejuvenation therapy. At this point I have of course no facts to share yet on the possible result of this treatment but I do already want to talk about my experience with the Dr and the clinic. My main goal is to give clear information to women who wish to walk down this same path in the hope it can help others. Admitted, I was quite nervous when I arrived at IASO center, I’ve reached a certain age, I was in a foreign country with a language I do not understand and about to undergo a laparoscopic treatment not quite knowing exactly what to expect. The team of Dr Garavelas was however very professional right from the start, they stood by me every step of the way, explaining every next action and ensuring I did not feel lost or uneasy. I found everything to be very well organized, whenever I needed to go to the another part of the hospital for blood tests or paperwork, I was always accompanied by a member of his team ensuring all was in order and would go smoothly. I met with Dr. Garavellas on the first day, he took his time to explain the procedure and also gave honest feedback on risk of failure or what the most realistic path to follow is. At no point did I have the impression something was made to look more optimistic than the reality. He stayed with me till I had no more questions to ask. On the day of the surgery, I found all safety measures to be in place, every single member of medical staff I encountered always checked the identity bracelet around my arm, everyone questioned me on possible allergies and medical history. I do not have easy veins when it comes to taking blood or inserting an infusion but also on that point, nobody had to make a second attempt. I saw Dr. Garavelas again shortly before the surgery and after the procedure he and 2 of his team members visited me in my room to check up on me, something which was highly appreciated, and to inform me that everything went as expected. My thanks and appreciation go of course in the first place to Dr Garavelas himself, also to Lucia for being so comforting and to Katerina for being caring and reachable. I also wish to extend my gratitude to Effie of Medipass who gave me the correct info and direction. A special thank you to Aphrodite for being by my side those two days, for supporting me and for being the radiant person she is! Once I am further down the path I have started, I will certainly share more here, hoping to give some courage to other women who have the dream and wish to have a child.
